Introduction Recovery boilers are used to reclaim important chemicals used in the paper pulping process. Black liquor is pumped into the boiler and evaporated to reclaim the most important chemicals. Our job was to design a camera attachment that can go into the boiler and capture video footage of this liquor spray into the boiler for efficiency analysis.
Summary of Design Concept • Images have been captured with an IR camera with a 90 degree lens attachment. • Our lens attachment needed to go further into the boiler. • We needed a design that was more robust and flexible.
Design Requirements • Our assembly needs to: • Survive the boiler environment. • Be able to look at different parts of the spray. • Still use current infrared camera.
Boiler Environment • High Heat • Floating Debris • High airflow
Fiber Optics • In order to translate the image from the lens to the IR camera with actuation we used a fiber optic cable.
Tip Actuation • In order to get the tip to look around we had to find a way to adjust the viewing angle.
Braided Steel Hose • To protect the fiber optics from the harsh boiler environment we used a braided steel hose around the actuating brackets.
Air Flow • In order to control the temperature of the fiber optic cable we pumped air through our assembly.
Continued Testing • As of current time we have not made it into a boiler for live testing, but we have plans to visit a boiler in the next couple of weeks. • We are committed to see the assembly at work in a boiler.
