  5. What is a spectroscope? • An instrument used to separate light into its colors.

  6. What are the colors in visible light? • ROY G BIV RED ORANGE YELLOW GREEN BLUE INDIGO VIOLET

  7. What do we learn from the spectra? • Temperature of star • Pressure of star • Elements present in star • Changes in distance

  8. What is a continuous spectrum? • Colors blended into each other • Comes from the sun

  9. What is a bright line (emission) spectrum? • Bright lines on a black background. • Every element has its own bright line spectrum.

  12. What is a dark line spectrum (absorption)? • Colored background with black lines where light is absorbed.

  14. Doppler Effect • Shift in spectrum because the object is moving.

  15. Red Shift • Object moving away. • Stretches wavelength. • Shifts toward red end.

  16. Blue Shift • Objects moving closer. • Squeezes wavelength. • Shifts toward blue end.
