What Is a Solar Vacuum tube? A Solar Vacuum tube is used to produce a large amount of heat by trapping sunlight and UV rays between two layers of vacuum-sealed glass by help of a patented three-layer coating system.
What’s it used for? Solar Vacuum tubes are primarly used to heat water and can be used wherever heat is needed: • Pools • Hot tubs • In floor heating • Water Radiators • Domestic hot water • Saunas • Drive way de-icing • Garage heating • Off-grid Cottages • Boats • Bottling • Sterilizing • Outdoor showers • Car Washes
How It Works(Without heat pipe) Systems without a heat pipe run on natural convection. • Natural convection is where cooler liquid (Water) flows to the lowest point and hot liquid rises (Water) creating an even flow in and out of the tube.
How a Vacuum Tube Works • Vacuum tubes contain two layers of glass with an opening at one end, and closing with a nipple where air was extracted to make a vacuum pressurized seal on the other. • The Getter and Spring holders are used to make sure the two layers stay out of contact .
How a Vacuum Tube Works (Cont) There are three coatings used in vacuum tubes: Infrared-reflection Layer (trap UV) Absorbance Layer (Absorb heat) Anti-Reflection Layer (Keep sunlight and UV rays inside) *Solar vacuum tubes can produce heat WITHOUT sun light, they can produce heat with just UV rays. ie. cloudy days
How a Heat Pipe Works Heat pipes are used for colder climates, and year round use in Canada. When heat pipes are used, no liquid goes inside the tube. • Made of Borrelen soft copper • Heat transfer point located at tip (Goes into Manifold) • Liquid boils at 30⁰C and natural convection takes over making vapour rise and condense.
Heat Output • One tube’s temperature reaches anywhere between 180 to 400 degrees • The outer layer is cold to the touch so there’s no risk of being burnt. For example, on a 22.6 degree overcast day, the interior of the tube reached an average of 336.2 degrees Celcius
