So much is happening • The pituitary gland is stimulated by the maturing hypothalamus and produces hormones • Growth spurt in synaptic connections and pruning • Frontal lobes not fully mylenated, still poor cognitive control over emotions • Sleep patterns change • Moods are intense and difficult to regulate • Self-focus • Critical attitude • Abstract thinking begins to develop

  3. Imaginary audience • Personal Fable • Invincibility Fable • New cognitive ideal not equal to reality

  4. Gender and Early Maturation • Girls and boys have different experiences • Depression Coping and Gender • Differentiate depressed mood that is normal from clinical depression to ensure correct interventions

  5. Formal Operational Thought • 11-12 • Abstractions • Coordinating multiple relationships • Better Metacognitive Skills • More self-criticalness

  6. Identity Achievement vs Confusion • Diffusion- No E or C • Moratorium- E only • Foreclosure- C only • Achievement- E & C

  7. What to remember when intervening • Meet client where they are at and scaffold to next stage if not contradicted • Look at specific domains • Don’t forget culture • Rebellion does not equal autonomy • Positive resolution • Earlier stages • Positive role models • Support for exploration

  8. Culture and Identity Development • Book does a poor job exploring that people of non-majority contend with oppression, internalized hatred for own group, rejection, limited opportunities to explore, and several identity processes occurring at one time that are often not supported by society. Book does not speak to the additional struggles of GBLT who may have to have separate identities in different situations. Book does not even address those with disabilities.

  9. Identity Development • Handouts • Review common theme of theories

  10. White Privilege • What does this have to do with the identity process?

  11. What can therapists do? • Expand and support opportunities to explore where appropriate • Support commitments • Remember to assess benefit of foreclosure and assess ego strength, support and cl goals prior to introducing exploration • Do not disengage from adolescents or give too much power

  12. What can therapists do? • Support perspective taking, responsible decision making, and critical thinking • Remember that adolescents test extremes to find their choices- normalize and help them to integrate. Help them to look at gradients in choices • Remember that while within group differences can outweigh between group differences- society discriminates as a whole, effecting each individual
