Afghanistan • 1979: Red Army invaded • To protect socialist gov’t • Their “Vietnam” conflict • Mujahedeen resistance • Regular army unable to defeat guerilla tactics • With a little help from the CIA
New Leadership • 1985: Mikhail Gorbachev • Glasnost: openness; free speech and free elections • Empowers angry reformers • Perestroika: economic reform and restructuring • Failed due to corruption
1989 • E. European communist regimes start to reform • Poland and Hungary • Berlin Wall comes down • Gorbachev decides not to intervene • All communist regimes fall in E. Europe
