  1. Upper Wabash River Basin Commission~Watershed Management Plan~Kick-off Meeting IDEM 205(j) Grant February 27, 2013

  2. Who are we? • The Upper Wabash River Basin Commission (UWRBC) was established by State Legislature in 2001 (IC 14-30-4). • The UWRBC has a total of 20 voting Commission Members . They are: • The three County Commissioners from Adams, Jay, Wells and Huntington Counties or their appointed representative. • The County Surveyor from Adams, Jay, Wells and Huntington Counties or their appointed representative. • The Chairman of the County Soil and Water Conservation District in Adams, Jay, Wells and Huntington Counties or their appointed representative.

  3. The UWRBC has a Steering Committee comprised of Commission Members and citizens interested in the Wabash River. The Steering Committee provides guidance and direction for Commission activities and makes recommendations to the voting members. • Anyone is welcome to join the steering committee. • The UWRBC also recruits volunteers to participate in educational events and water quality monitoring.

  4. What we’ve done: • Watershed management plan for Phase I of the Wabash River – from the Ohio State Line to CR 450 E, at the White Bridge in Bluffton. (2006 – 2007) • Cost-share program for landowners in the Phase I watershed area, and provided over $103,000 from IDEM/EPA funds to area landowners and land users. (2009-2013) • Water quality monitoring at 18 sites in the Phase I watershed area. Volunteers plan to continue monitoring. (2009 – 2013)

  5. What Now? • The UWRBC has a new IDEM 205(j) grant to develop a watershed management on Phase II. • The planning process will take 2 years to complete.

  7. What will we do? • Get local citizen’s involved • Discuss water quality concerns • Make a vision for the future • Investigate and inventory the watershed characteristics • Monitor the water quality • Analyze discoveries and identify problems • Set goals and propose action plans

  8. How will we do it? • Public meetings to gather input and report progress • Newsletters, media releases • Displays at community events • Workshops and Field Day • Livestock Manure Management • Fertilizer Management • Septic’s • Wetland/Buffer practices
