  3. Why read at home? Research shows that when children read with an adult at home, children find learning to read easier and usually become better readers. • As parents you are your child's most influential teacher with an important part to play in helping your child to learn to read. Parent Wshop

  5. When and How to share a book

  6. When? • Set aside a special time each day • Share books when you and your child are in a relaxed mood. • Ten minutes a day is enough Parent Wshop

How to share a book • Hold the book so that your child can see the pages clearly • Ask your child to point out things they know in the pictures…chat about the story • Repeat common words together • Make the stories interesting by using expression, voices and changes in pace. • Re Read your child’s favourite books Parent Wshop

  9. Show your child how to do these things • Where the title and the author is on the cover • Turn the pages • Where you start reading on a page • The left page comes before the right page • You read from left to right and return sweep at the end of a line Parent Wshop

  10. Can your child do these things? • Can your child point to the words as you read ? • Can your child find any words in the book he/she knows? • Can your child tell you the story from the pictures? • Can your child tell you what’s going to happen next Parent Wshop

  14. Working with sounds with your child and how to say them • Practise singing simple rhymes with your child • Get your child to practise finding letters in their name and saying the sounds they make Parent Wshop
