Family Medicine Residency Established in 1989 First graduating class in 1991 Since 1991, have graduated 85 Family Physicians – 80% have stayed in Nevada Opened our current clinic in 2003 Residents are trained in all aspects of medicine including Obstetrics, Neurology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Cardiology, Dermatology, and Emergency Medicine.

  3. Our Clinic 16 exam rooms, 2 procedure rooms, and a state of the art conference room. We see over 11,000 patient visits per year including expecting mothers, children, adults and the elderly.

  4. Hospital Service Our residents see over 700 patients per year at UMC hospital Each resident averages 5-7 patients per day. 92% of our hospital patients are uninsured.

  5. Obstetrics Fellowship • Started in 2004 • Fellows are trained in advanced mother/child care including fetal ultrasound, medical complications of pregnancy, fetal assessment, delivery and Caesarean sections

  6. Sports Medicine Fellowship Started in 2006 12 months of training in muscle and bone injuries, exercise physiology and medical conditions specific to athletes.

  7. Urgent Care Fellowship Urgent Care Fellowship started in 2010. 12 months of clinical experience in the field of Urgent Care Medicine. This includes rotations in Emergency Medicine, Orthopedic Surgery, Cardiology, and working at local urgent cares (UMC Quick Care)

  9. TAR WARS Anti-tobacco program presented by faculty and residents to 5th graders in Southern Nevada Last year we presented to 19 classrooms and over 500 students

  10. Home Visits Each Family Resident makes 1-2 home visits per year for patients that cannot come into the clinic.

  11. Rural • Residents complete a 1 month rotation in a rural location in Nevada. Locations include Ely, Elko, and Boulder City.

  12. Community Health Fairs and Flu Shot Clinics Last year our residents and faculty served at 9 community health fairs and gave over 750 flu shots.

  13. High School Physicals Last year faculty and residents performed over 1,400 high school athlete physicals at reduced cost.

  14. Volunteers In Medicine Faculty and residents volunteer at the “Volunteers in Medicine” clinic 1-2 times per month. This is a free clinic in eastern Las Vegas where patients without insurance can be seen by a physician and receive labs and prescriptions for free.

  15. Centering Pregnancy Residents see pregnant patients in a non-traditional Obstetrics clinics • Most patients have no insurance (underserved) • Patients take their own vital signs before seeing the doctor • Patients meet at each visit as a group and discuss issues relating to their pregnancy.

  16. Advance Life Support In Obstetrics (ALSO) Dr. Elissa J. Palmer brought the ALSO program to Nevada! All of our faculty are trained to perform and teach this intense two day course. All residents are ALSO certified To date we have taught 6 courses in Reno and Las Vegas and have trained hundreds of providers in these life saving techniques.

  17. Scholarly Activities • Senior Residents present a scholarly project at the end of their final year of residency. • Projects have included: • Research into cardiac health of women of Southern Nevada (including a $5,000 grant) • A presentation on a resident’s work in earthquake ravaged Haiti • Research on childhood obesity

Radiation Exposure and Nevada Test Site Dr. Hunt has received a grant for the last 5 years to screen for cancer, patients who were potentially exposed to radiation from nuclear bomb testing in Nevada (down-winders) Dr. Hunt has also obtained a grant to screen patients for cancer, that worked at the Nevada Test Site..
