Early Life Michael Collins was born on October 16th near Sam’ s Cross in West Cork. He went to school in Lisavaird. The schoolmaster, Denis Lyons was a member of the IRB and had a big influence on his life as a child. The young Michael Collins was a keen sportsman. He played the local game of road bowling. 1916 Rising When Michael Collins returned to Dublin from London in 1916, he was Made a Staff Officer in the IRB. In the 1916 Rising he fought in the GPO Along with Padraig Pearse. At the end of the Rising he was arrested and sent to Stafford jail in England. Later that year he was transferred to Frongoch camp in Wales along with a lot of other prisoners. The war of Independence In 1918, at the end of World War I, there was a general election held in Britain and Ireland. Sinn Fein won lots of seats and decided to set up a parliament in Dublin called the Dail. Michael Collins became Minister for Finance. In 1919 the War of Independence began. Collins organized spies to find out what the British were up to. He put spies in Dublin Castle and always knew what the British were going to do next. The Treaty Michael Collins and two other men went over to London to talk about the 32 counties. At the end of it Ireland got twenty-six counties. Antrim / Fermamagh / Armagh / Derry / Tyrone / Down became Northern Ireland. This is called the treaty. Collins was very upset about the treaty. Beal na mBlath On August 22, shortly after the death of Arthur Griffith, Michael Collins was on a tour of inspection in the Cork area. Returning in convoy from Bandon he was ambushed at Beal na mBlath (The Mouth of Flowers) and died immediately of a single gunshot wound to the head.
