  5. Digital Participation • Observation: • Noticed only about 10% or less of ARES members check into a net via a digital mode • Why? • Too expensive? • Don’t know where to start? • Don’t have the time? • Complicated? • Who operated a digital mode in last 30 days? • Who exchanged an E-mail message in last 30 days?

  6. Digital Modes • Email IS a digital mode • Keyboard to Keyboard • BBS, Chat, E-mail, Web Browser • E-mail is universal • Automatic Position Reporting (APRS) • Packet, Pactor • SSTV, DIGSSTV • VoIP - DV (digital voice) • Repeater Linking (IRLP, EchoLink, D-Star) • Skype – (remote rig operations)

  9. Need more Digital participation in EmComm: • Computer is part of every day life • Already familiar with E-mail, instant messaging, etc. • Should be pretty easy for anyone to operate a digital mode • Some Digital modes can be complex: • Issues with software configuration • Getting the connections right • Rig control and audio adjustments

  10. Elmers: • Education and training • Help with rig interface • Software installation and configuration • Practice • Get used to the applications • Experiment, try things out • Share the Knowledge • Presentations and Hands on Workshops

  11. Software Applications

  12. A global system that allows Amateur Radio Operators to send and receive standard internet E-mail with binary attachments via ham radio… • …with or without a direct internet connection • Also peer to peer messaging via Packet and Pactor • Winlink project started in the late 1980’s Winlink 2000

  13. Very Flexible • Multiple connectivity options: • Telnet directly to server using various internet connections • Ethernet - DSL / Cable / Satellite / GSM / CDMA • Wifi - 802.11a/b/g HSMM • D-star - ID-1 • Use Airmail or Paclink MP (Outlook Express) Winlink 2000

  14. Multiple connectivity options: (con’t) • Packet (Don’t have to remember commands) • Airmail Client • Paclink MP (Outlook Express) • F6FBB B2 Compression • APRSLink • Outpost • Peer to Peer Winlink 2000

  15. Winlink 2000 • Multiple connectivity options: • Pactor 1, 2, 3: • Airmail Client • Paclink MP (Outlook Express) • Through RMS Pactor (PMBO) • F6FBB B2 Compression • Peer to Peer

  16. What does Winlink offer the served agency? Winlink 2000 • The capability to send and receive written messages with 100% accuracy to/from any individual with an email address • Multiple recipients • Allows emergency teams in remote areas without internet access to receive email or peer to peer messages in the field • Prevents them from having to transcribe, format or modify documents before sending

  17. System core Winlink 2000 • CMS: Central message server. This is the main hub of the system. There are three with full-time redundant mirroring of each other and real-time failover. They are geographically dispersed. Accept connections from PMBOs, Telpac, Paclink, and Airmail via Telnet • PMBO: Participating Mail Box Operator/Office. This is the primary hub for user connections. Most support Telnet and many support VHF and HF connections • PMBOs will be replaced by RMS Packet, RMS Pactor and RMS Relay

  19. The HAM’s applications: Winlink 2000 • Airmail:This is the primary single user client. Connects via Telnet to the CMS similar to the way your favorite email client connects to the internet … • … Or, it can connect to a Telpac node via VHF/UHF Packet or directly to a PMBO via HF Pactor. • Telpac:The name meansTELnet toPACketbridge. This is exactly what it does. It is the program that allows the ham operator to bridge the “Last Mile” on VHF/UHF. Quickly, easily, and cheaply. • Telpac will be replaced by RMS Packet

  20. Winlink 2000

  21. The HAM’s applications: Winlink 2000 • Paclink:This is a more complex user client with considerably more flexibility. • It functions as a stand alone POP/SMTP server for a LAN. • Messages are composed/read using popular E-mail programs. • It can provide tactical email addressing: • GACobbEOC @ winlink .org • ARCshelter-1 @ winlink .org • All tied to the Ham’s callsign when traversing the Winlink system. • Paclink provides multiple transport connections to CMS

  35. Where do I start to use Winlink? Winlink 2000 • Download and use Airmail ( No $$$) www.winlink.org/Client.htm • Internet only (telnet to CMS) • 2M packet ( KPC3+, 9612) • Install Telpac nodes on VHF/UHF Packet • Low cost Radio • TNC (KPC3+, 9612) • Minimum Celeron CPU w/ XP or Win2k • Fulltime internet connection • Interface with D-Star ID-1 for backup TCP/IP connection

  36. Sound Card Modes • Almost no cost to interface computer to radio • Lot’s of free software • Download software and tune into QSOs by placing PC microphone next to radio. • Works on HF, VHF / UHF

  37. PSK31 • Soundcard Based • Keyboard to Keyboard • Narrow bandwidth • Approx 50wpm • Monitor multiple QSOs (Digipan, psk31Deluxe) • Very popular • Field Day Favorite • Quick to set up • Several Software Applications free • Pocket PC version available for portability

  38. PSK31

  39. MT63 • Soundcard based • More reliable than PSK31 • FEC for redundancy • Wider bandwidth • Approx 100 wpm at 1kHz bandwidth • Text file and binary file transfers • Download free software

  40. Deputation • Need Liaisons and Relay stations • Learn multiple modes • Bridge HF to Packet / Internet • Copy/paste from MT63 to Airmail etc. • Bridge HF messages to D-Star apps • Copy/paste psk31 msg to Email/Airmail • Packet to Internet • Telpac, D-Star

  41. Deputation • Coordinate Workshops and Training • Interface Equipment • Install and configure Software • Troubleshooting • Test – Test – Test (someone on other end) • Scheduled and spontaneous Digital Nets • Research other modes and options • Keep up with new applications • Develop new applications

  42. Digital Jump Kit • 2M/440 rig or HF/2M/440 rig • Laptop (WinXP, Vista, or Linux) • Auto/Air DC-DC Adapter • KPC3+ or 9612 (TNC-X w/AGWPE) • Sound card interface (Signalink USB) • 50 AHr SLA / Power Supply • All-in-one Printer/Scanner/Copier
