  1. Marine Stratus Experiment (MASE) When- July 2005 Location- Point Reyes National Seashore, CA North of San Francisco

  2. Marine Stratus Experiment (MASE) • Objectives- • Examine the effects of aerosol loading, composition and size distribution on cloud droplet number concentrations and size distributions. • Characterize the effects of turbulence and cloud properties such as liquid water content, droplet number concentration and droplet dispersion on the initiation of drizzle. • Gather in-situ cloud data suitable for examination of the dependence of the autoconversion rate on droplet size distribution and number concentration.

  3. Marine Stratus Experiment (MASE) Proposed G-1 Instruments-

  4. Marine Stratus Experiment (MASE) Proposed G-1 Instruments cont’d-

  5. Collaborations • Proposed to conduct MASE in collaboration with - • MArine Stratus Radiation, Aerosol, and Drizzle (MASRAD) IOP • Point Reyes — March 2005-September 2005 • PI’s: Miller (BNL), Bucholtz (NRL), Albrecht (Miami), and Kollias (Miami) • Summer deployment • of the CIRPAS Twin Otter • (Seinfeld et al)

  6. MASRAD Scientific Objectives • Investigate the general relationship between cloud mesoscale structure, aerosols, cloud microphysics, drizzle and radiation in marine stratus clouds • Investigate the effect of aerosol on the amount of solar radiation absorbed by clouds

  7. MASRAD Resources • AMF 95 GHz Radar • AERI • Microwave Radiometer (MWR) • MWR-Profiler • Micropulse Lidar • Vaisala Ceilometer • MFRSR • A complete radiometer package • BBS- 4/day • Whole sky imager • Surface met (T, RH, Winds) • Eddy correlation flux system • Aerosol package • For more details go to- • http://www.arm.gov/sites/

  8. AMF Siting AT+T Site Point Reyes National Seashore

  9. Proposed Site Layout Wind M-Van Aerosols WACR, MPL, AERI MWR, MWR-P ECOR Skyrad, Gndrad SMET, misc. radiometers

  10. Call for Participation • Ideal opportunity for ASP to begin indirect effects studies. • Availability of facilities that may not be available for future studies. • Good location with lots of clouds. • Encourage ASP scientists to participate by refining the scientific goals of the project, by providing useful measurements for the G-1 or at Pt. Reyes, or by using the data to achieve ASP scientific goals.
