All-Campus Events The good and bad at APU

The Study • All-Campus Events Defined: • Any event planned or sponsored by an APU office or department that is open to all students and not the public. • The Questions: • How much programming occurs each day of the week? • Is the current level of programming meeting student needs?
All-School Calendar Total Events: 183
Ethnic Organization Events Total Events: 54
Realistically: Res Life and Communiversity Total Events: 212
Athletics, Theater & Music Total Events: 302
The Average APU undergraduate students have an average of 19 events offered to them each week.
The Participants • 6 student leaders • Residence Life • Communiversity • Student Government Association • Multi-Ethnic Programs • Student Success • World Missions
The Themes • Big Themes • APU has good events • There’s nothing to do on weekends • Collaboration needs to improve • Smaller Themes • Advertising needs to change • Students want unique/new events • Weekend trends could change
On Good Events • “This campus puts on so many events – too many – but they’re good.” • “What’s being done is great.”
On Weekends • “There’s nothing over the weekends, APU loses a huge crowd and lots of interests because of that. On weekends, the campus shuts down so people leave and the people who stay, because they’re from far away, hate it.” • “There’s an idea set that there’s nothing to do on weekends so people don’t look for things to do on campus. Instead they look for off-campus things to do.”
On Collaboration • “Offices need to collaborate more to bring in a more diverse crowd of people.” • “APU offices need to do a better job working together. [My office] has problems with that. I know that [another office] looks at the all-school calendar, but when my staff plans events we don’t look at it.”
Suggestions • Collaborate more • Better and equally utilize the all-school programming calendar • Communicate your purpose for events to other offices • Plan weekend events • Create an easily accessible event calendar • For offices • For students
Limitations • Not all events are listed on the all-school programming calendar • Only interviewed student leaders • Not all offices were represented • No first-year representation • Student Leaders are typically more involved
