  4. Eyes on ASL #15 Watch DVD! • Follow this sequence to describe physical characteristics: • 1.) Gender • 2.) Ethnicity/background (optional) • 3.) Height • 4.) Body type • 5.) Eyes, hair, and other details such as clothing. • (Important you want to know this!!)

  5. Things to know when describing people! Accent Steps p. 296 • Point towards these body parts: eyes, ears, and nose • Short and tall share the same sign as child and adult • Fingerspell DA for Disabled and HC for Handicapped • First sign hair, then add the color • (Important you want to know this!!)

  6. Expression Corner p. 296 LOOK STRONG Use LOOK STRONG to show that two people share many of the same physical characteristics. In English, you could say “I look a lot like…” or “they look a lot alike…” or just “I/He/She looks like my/his/her…”

Let’s Practice… • Hayley looks like her mom. • Anthony is African-American. • Arnold Schwarzenegger is Austrian and is very buff! • His father is Indian and lost weight. • That white woman is chubby. • My brother is shy and humble because he is Asian. • Uncle Joe is bald and thin. • Is that woman pregnant?

  10. Look at the pictures and use ethnicity signs to explain each person’s background.

  11. Video… • Watch Sean sign about looking like his grandfather. • Note how he uses Shoulder-Shifting. • Look at how much facial expression he uses!

  12. Accent Steps p. 303 • To Braid • Note how the VERB “to braid” differs from how you sign the NOUN “braid”. • Remember BRAID or put the BRAIDS where they are on the person!

Deaf tend theirs (p. 308) Expression Corner “Deaf tend theirs”… The expression “deaf tend theirs” is used to discuss specific attitudes , beliefs and habits or other characteristics found within the Deaf culture as a whole. It means “something Deaf people do”. The phrase “tend theirs” can be applied to an individual OR a group of people. Examples? Page 308 CE “M” #2.

  23. THINK YOU GOT IT? • We will have an assignment to see how well you are doing. • There is fingerspelling portion, number portion and a video portion as well! • Good luck!

Your Turn! – CAP 5 • You will get a rubric “Describing a Good Friend” (You can sign about a family member instead if you wish!) • You need to describe what your friend looks like. • Include: • Gender • Ethnicity • Height (tall/short compared to you) • Body type • Eyes, hair, other details such as clothing (what is in the picture of them you bring. • Describe their personality • BRING A PICTURE for us to see. (-5 pts if no pic) • Must be 10 or more sentences!

What I look like? • You need a sheet of paper and something with which to write. • Open your book to page 303. • We will watch “What I look like” on DVD. • Answer the 5 questions at the BOTTOM of page 303 in section 2 in classroom exercise “J”. • There are only 5 questions so each is worth 2o points! BE CAREFUL and do good work. I will show you the video 3 times…1x, 1/2x, 1x.

  33. POW! (aka HIT) Use Pow in these situations: • Catching an illness (instead of to have or get) • Signing about something unexpected happening. • Examples: • You “pow” a cold…you don’t catch it! • You were walking home and pow! It started raining. • TRY SIGNING THE EXAMPLES ABOVE!

  35. “Bless You” …a.k.a. “Gesundheit” p. 314 • Read “I want to know…” page 314. • Practice signing the two different ways of signing “Gesundheit”. • The first way is a one-handed version of BLESS…so you are basically saying “bless you”! • The second way is making the sign of the cross on the person as if being “blessed” in church.

  36. Did you know? P. 314 There are approximately 50-60 Deaf medical doctors in the U.S. As more deaf doctors graduate medical school, assumptions about deafness are fading. Armed with special equipment like visual stethoscopes, interpreters and a can-do attitude, deaf doctors are breaking the stereotypes and perceptions about what being deaf means.

  37. ASL Close Up Pg. 315 Move the sign Hurt around your body to change the meaning to headache, earache, or stomachache. You can do the same thing with CL: 4. Using this classifier you can mean running water, nosebleed or blood depending on the area the sign is signed in. Look on page 315 for some examples.

  38. Classroom Exercise “U” –What’s Wrong? • Look at the pictures on page 315. • GET A PARTNER. • I will assign you one of the pictures. One of the people in your group has the problem in the picture. • The other student in your group will show sympathy , ask how it happened, and make a suggestion on what you should do. • You may speak for 2 minutes…then silence!
