  2. Page 11 • Dingy • Décor • Sipped her coffee • Impeccable • Bribe • Straddled it • A tape • Nancy, Ann, and Bess are sitting in the cafeteria of the Police Precinct talking about the case. Nancy says that her uncle Jon couldn’t have done this, accuse her father of bribing. The judge, uncle Jon, thinks the bribe came from Nancy’s dad. The police have a tape of Nancy’s dad.

  3. Page 12 • The tape’s a fake • Fooled the judge • A quarter • Satisfied • A bank of telephones • Deposited • Lilting brogue • His honor • Nancy is so upset that she asks Ned for a quarter to call Uncle Jon. The housekeeper answers the phone and says that Uncle Jon has been feeling ill.

Page 13 • Hurriedly • He won’t be taking calls • Sick at heart • Gusty sigh • Crawling by • Filling me in • Crossed her long legs • Anonymous tip • Mid-City Insurance Company • Nancy insists on getting in contact with Uncle Jon. The housekeeper says that she will call him. Nancy hangs up the phone and then asks the reporter, Ann, for information on the case. Ann tells Nancy that she got a tip to investigate the Mid-City insurance company.

Page 14 • A coffin • No insurance agents • Send it on to a post office box • Snorted • A cushy job • The parent corporation • Names tied to organized crime • Nancy and Ann begin to talk about this insurance company which only has a small room for an office and no insurance agents. All calls are passed on to a man who phones once a day and the parent company is linked to organized crime.

Page 15 • Paying their premiums • Wrote the articles • Didn’t press for the name of my sources • Bewildered • Crimson Oaks • Retirement village • Slapped the court order in my hand • Dismissed you • Ann tells about how she figured out that the insurance company didn’t really exist. It was a “tapadera” for three companies in the area. She testified in court and thought it was over, without having to give up her source. Then, someone gave her a court order to give up her source.

Page 16 • Issued the court order • Recessed • Widened • Stared at her hands • Frame her father • Face was taut • Grim • Arraigned • Made bail • Pretrial hearing • Bound over • Ann tells Nancy that she has no intention of telling who her source is. She actually doesn’t know who her source is. They jury has taken a break to let her think about what she wants to say. Meanwhile, Carson, Nancy’s father, has left jail on bail. They will have a hearing to see if he should be put on trial.

Page 17 • Dropped off • Headed for • Directed her • Battered • Rear wall • Unbuckled • Got out • Shook her head • A half-dozen cars • Long-legged stride • Dug into her purse • Flipped on her brights • Carson, Nancy’s father, tells them that the police office will tell him when his court date is set. They are going to “drop Ann off” at the newspaper’s office. They drive around back to where Ann’s car is and Nancy turns on the “brights” so Ann can see the keys better.

Page 18 • Grimy • Tailpipe • Shiny • Too clean • Key turned • Asphalt • Hurled herself • Without breaking stride • Timing • Deafening roar • Enormous ball of flame • Ann gets into her car and begins to start the car. Nancy notices a box attached to the car under the exhaust pipe (tubo de escape) and shouts for Ann to get out of the car. Nancy saves Ann’s life by getting her out of the car in time. The car exploded.
