Compare how cultures differ in their use of similar environments and resources. • T.P.I 6.1.spi.7. identify how early writing forms in Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Indus Valley • influenced life (i.e., legal, religious, and culture)

  3. Objectives • Objectives: 1. 1. Students will engage in a classroom discussion of religious and cultural customs of Ancient Egyptian burials. 2.Students will fill out a T-chart about differences between Ancient Egyptian and modern American religious and cultural rituals. • 3. Students will create their own cardboard tombs, decorate them, place personal items and them and share with the class. • 4. Students will write a one paragraph reflection in their learning logs.

By the end of this lesson, I can… 1. discuss Ancient Egyptian culture and religious rituals. 2. think of least five similarities and differences between Ancient Egypt and modern America. 3. create my own personalized tomb with what I think is important to me. 4. write a thoughtful reflection.

Vocabulary • Hieroglyph: picture or symbol representing an object, concept, or sound • Tomb: a monument for housing or commemorating a dead person • Pharaoh: Egyptian king who ruled over a dynasty • Dynasty: length of time a ruling family and Pharaoh was in charge of a kingdom • Mummification: the act of preparing a body for burial

  8. Primary Source • The picture you just saw was the real tomb of Anesemes, priestess of Amnu-Re Dynasty XXI 1088-950 B.C. • It was taken at Frank H. Mc Clung Museum. • What do you notice about it? • What does this tell you? • Why do you think Ancient Egyptians spent so much time, effort and riches on the burial process? • Are you ready to find out more?

  9. Religion • Ancient Egyptians were highly religious people and worshipped about 2000 gods or more! • Their days were full of rituals worshipping their many gods. There were several temples thought to be the home of gods.

Religion • “What we call gods in the ancient Egyptian religion could usually die, be hurt, had mothers, fathers and children and many could even make very bad mistakes.”(touregypt.net) • Here are some examples: Anubis: He was the god of embalming bodies. He observes the mummification process and takes the bodies into the afterlife. Anubis can e in a jackal or • man form.

  11. Religion Isis is one of the most well known Ancient Egyptian gods. She is the goddess who was considered to be the great protector. Nearly every Ancient Egyptian worshipped her ! She was known for protecting Egypt and begging for world peace.

  12. Burial Ceremony • Ancient Egyptians believed that if they wanted to take something with them in to the afterlife, it had to be buried with them. • Also, the decorations on the outside of the tomb signified wealth. • Protective spells were written on the outside of the coffin.

Independent Practice • Fill out your t-charts with at least five similarities and differences between Ancient Egyptian and modern American culture. • Research the websites, find at least one hieroglyph you would like to use on your personal tomb. Decorate your tomb, take it home tonight and fill it up with important person items to share with the class tomorrow. • Write at least a one paragraph reflection in your learning log. Be sure to include one fact you learned about Ancient Egyptian culture, one idea you may find interesting and one idea that may be unclear to you!
