  2. Quick Write Questions • What do you believe is embryonic stem cell research? What is your take on this controversial issue? OR • If you have not heard of embryonic stem cell research, what do you think it is and why do you believe it is causing such a big controversy? What helped you come up with your conclusion?

  3. Illustration Analysis • What comes to mind when you look at this illustration? Why? • What major point is this illustration trying to make? Proof. • How does this illustration make you feel about stem cell research? Explain.

  4. Illustration 2 • What is the problem with stem cell research based on this cartoon? Proof. • Who is being blamed here? Proof.

  5. Illustration 3 • What is the purpose of this cartoon? Prove it. • What viewpoint is this cartoon taking? Prove it.

  6. “The Great Debate” • Read the article. • Mark your reactions in the right hand margin. • Label the major points in the left hand margin. • Highlight words that you don’t understand or know. • Find the definitions of at least 5 of the words you don’t know. Then put the definition into your own words. • Lastly, what is stem cell research? Why is it such a great debate?

  7. Reading response • Create arguments for and against stem cell research. Try to come up with at least 5 per side. • Discuss the perception that a woman would have. • Why would women or soon-to-be mothers promote stem cell research? Why would they not? • Present group ideas to the class

  8. SOAPSTone • In an analysis paragraph (format), prove the purpose of this article. • Example topic sentence: In “The Great Debate”, Reaves uses the perspective of a (voice) to (inform/explain/etc) (audience) of (subject).

  9. Ethos Pathos Logos • Create a Tri-Chart. • Label the sections Ethos, Pathos, Logos • In each section, list phrases that exemplify each category. Fill your chart. • When the chart is complete, answer the following question: Which section was utilized the most throughout the article and what does this do for the element of persuasion? Explain.

  10. “Saving Sight, Testing Faith” • Complete the crossword puzzle. The words can be found in the article. • Then, use 5 of the words in a cohesive paragraph.

  11. First Read • Do a full text marking of the article. • What perspective on stem cell research is this article focusing on? Prove it. • Why would the author want to focus on this perspective? Prove it.

  12. Reread and strategically mark • Draw a line when the introduction ends. • Then draw a line every time the main idea changes. • Label all the sections in the left hand margin.

  13. Audience Paragraph & Response • In a well-developed analysis paragraph, prove who the intended audience is. • Don’t forget to cite properly and to fully comment on your quotes. • Then answer the following question thoroughly: In the first paragraph, adult stem cells are discussed. Are these types of stems cells a good alternative to embryonic stem cells? Why or why not? Prove your point.

  14. Ethos Pathos and Logos • Does the author seem like a credible source for writing on this perspective? Explain. • What is the author’s major assertion/claim/point? How is the assertion developed?

  15. Illustration Analysis • What information do you get from this illustration? • What ideas come to mind from this cartoon? • Does it change your position towards STR? Explain.

  16. “Ethic and Social Considerations? • Complete the word search. • As you read this article, find your vocabulary words and circle them. • Then use context clues to figure out what the word means and right that definition near the word.

  17. SOAPSTone • Reread the article and find proof of the speaker, occasion, audience, purpose, and subject. Underline the proof and label them. • In the left hand margin, briefly note why that proof is correct.

  18. Ethos, Pathos, Logos • Using 3 different colored highlighters, find all the statements that prove the rhetorical modes. • Once you have completed the highlighting, analyze which mode was used the most. What does this do for the author’s argument and why?

  19. “A Pro-Life Future” Predictions • Just by looking at the title of the article, what do you think that it will be about and why? • Read the first paragraph. Do you think that embryonic stem cells are a good resource based off of this paragraph? Explain. • Do you think that the destruction of embryos is acceptable? Explain. • Would you rather use alternatives instead of embryonic stem cells? Explain.

  20. First Read and Discussion • Fully annotate your article: left and right margins. • What did you find most interesting about the article? • Would you use embryonic stem cells if it was going to cure you? Explain. • Would you rather use the alternatives? Why?

  21. SOAPSTone • Prove all elements of the SOAPSTone. Don’t forget to use textual support.

Thinking Critically • If you were asked to join a picket line inregards to embryonic stem cell research which side would you take? • As a group, decide if you are for or against stem cell research. • Then create your picket sign. What will your phrase be? Will it contain a picture? • Then after your sign is created, on the back of it, explain your reasoning for your side of stem cell research. Make sure to use solid evidence as opposed to your feelings.

  23. “Arguments Against Embryonic Stem Cell Research” • Just by looking at the title of the article, what do you think that it will be about and why? • Why would the author write about this? • When do you think an embryo should be considered living? Explain.

  24. Reading • For you first read, do a full left and right text marking. • As you re-read the article, highlight words that present the tone of the article. • After re-reading, write an analysis paragraph proving why the author would use the particular tone throughout the article.

  25. Ethos,Pathos,Logos • What is learned about the author in this article? Prove it. • What is the major assertion made in this article and how was it developed? • What does the author’s writing style tell you about his intended audience? Explain.

  26. Final Essay Prompt • In a well-developed essay, take a position on embryonic stem cell research. Inform the reader of the reasons why it should or should not be legal. Make sure to use statistics, specific details, and/or examples from your own experiences or observations.
