  2. What is Erosion? • Erosion is the removal and transport of material by wind, water, or ice. • Erosion can occur in many places • Beaches – any area of the shoreline made up of material deposited by waves • Deserts • Mountains • Glacial Valleys and many more

  3. Water Erosion and DepositionBeaches • Erosion on beaches occurs when the waves crash down on them and carry away the sand. • This type of erosion makes a variety of features • Sea Stacks • SeaCliffs • Sea Caves • Headland • Wave-cut terrace

Water Erosion and DepositionBeaches • At the shoreline, the place where land and a body of water meet, is where the most erosion takes place • Longshore currents, a movement of water that is parallel to the shoreline, transport and deposits material offshore • This creates landforms in open water • Sandbars • Barrier spits sandbar

Wind Erosion and DepositionDeserts • Major components of erosion and deposition in deserts • Saltation - process by which sand size particles skip and bounce across the land, over time making them smaller • Deflation- lifting and removal of fine sediment • Abrasion- grinding and wearing down of rock surfaces by other rock or sand particles

  6. Wind Erosion and DepositionDeserts • There are some obstacles made by wind erosion • Dunes – mounds of wind-deposited sand • Loess – thick deposits of fine-grained sediment

  7. Ice Erosion and DepositionGlaciers • A glacier is a very large mass of moving ice • There are two types of glaciers • Alpine glaciers • Forms in mountainous areas • Continental glaciers • Stretch across whole continents

  8. Ice Erosion and DepositionGlaciers • Large pieces of ice that break off of an ice shelf and float on open water are icebergs • Crevasses are large cracks that form where the glacier picks up speed or flows over a high point

  9. Ice Erosion and DepositionGlaciers • Glacial drift is a term used to describe all material carried and deposited by glaciers • There are 2 main types of glacial drift • Stratified drift • Sorted • Till • unsorted Lateral Lateral and Terminal Moraines Terminal

Gravitational Erosion and Deposition • Mass movement is the movement of any material downslope • Rock fall- a group of loose rocks that fall down a steep slope • Landslide- a sudden and rapid movement of a large amount of material downslope • Mudflow- the rapid movement of a large mass of mud, rock, and soil mixed with a large amount of water • Creep- the extremely slow movement of material

  11. Summary of Erosion and Deposition Erosion is the slow detereriation of Earth’s crust. Deposition s the settling of materials from erosion.
