  3. To solve the greatest fiscal challenge facing the county.

  4. There is treasure in trash in Nassau County. Let’s stop burying it. $ Millions!

  5. Current Year • $ 3 Million - Residential assessments • $ 5 Million - One Cent sales tax used to cover operational deficits

  6. Proposed 07-08 Budget Year • $ 3 Million - Residential Assessments • $ 2 Million - One Cent sales tax used to cover operational deficits • $ 1 Million - Reserves used to cover operational deficits $2 Million annual debt service eliminated

  7. We Were Elected To Solve Problems • This is a financial problem • We must avoid non-financial distractions • New outcomes require new approaches

  8. To Stop The Bleeding We must: • Identify “permanent closure” funding sources • Identify “post closure” funding sources • Eliminate on-going deficits (including ending operations totally) • Eliminate the residential assessment now imposed on the citizens

  9. Possible Solutions • Sell it. • Wholesale remaining space (fill up the landfill) • Partner - Private enterprise • Convert it – Private enterprise transfer station • Close it down.

  10. Closure Cost $ 15 Million(Probably $ 12 - $ 13 Million) Funding proposed to close the landfill Oct 1, 2007: • $ 2 Million One Cent sales tax (07-08 budget) • $ 3 Million One Cent sales tax reserve • $ 2 Million anticipated Residual Equity • $ 6 Million closure escrow • $ 1 Million Renewal / Replacement Reserve • $ 1 Million LF Cash Reserve

  11. There is treasure in the trash at the Nassau County landfill. Because time is of the essence, Let’s get an RFP on the street TODAY!
