  5. The “Singles” Life • “Free” from marriage. • Available for “pleasure”. • Move from person to person without commitment. • No restraint needed…

  6. 1A: Children Some grow up & marry. Some grow up and do not. 1B: Adults Some will marry. Some will not. Group 1: “Single, Never Married”

  7. 2A: Widows, widowers Some remarry. Some don’t remarry. 2B: Separated or divorced. Some reconcile. Some remarry. Some don’t remarry. Group 2: “Single Again”

  8. Potential Issues for These Four Kinds of Singles

  9. 1. Is he or she able to be celibate? • NIV 1 Corinthians 7:8 Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I am. 9 But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.

  10. NIV Matthew 19:12 For some are eunuchsbecause they were born that way; others were made that way by men; and others have renounced marriage because of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it."

  11. 2. Does he or she want to marry? • Some singles feel “forced” by others to marry. • Some singles may marry hastily, just to be married. • It is alright to be single AND stay single.

  12. 3. Is a person wanting to remarry? • NIV 1 Corinthians 7:39 A woman is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, but he must belong to the Lord.

  13. Single AND Spiritual • NIV 1 Corinthians 7:32 I would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord's affairs-- how he can please the Lord. 33 But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world-- how he can please his wife--

  14. Single AND Spiritual • 34 and his interests are divided. • An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord's affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit. But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world--

  15. Single AND Spiritual • how she can please her husband. • 35 I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but that you may live in a right way in undivided devotion to the Lord.

  16. Church Ministry & Singles • Encourage those who are single to devote themselves to the Lord- undivided loyalty. • All four groups.

  17. Church Ministry & Singles • Including single persons in holidays, as needed or desired.

  18. Church Ministry & Singles • Singles fellowshipping singles… with and without dating expectations.

  19. Church Ministry & Singles • Leadership making sure that members who are single are fully part of the church family.

  20. Church Ministry & Singles • Singles making sure leaders are affirmed and informed about their needs.

  21. Church Ministry & Singles • Affirming the need/ability to stay celibate and seeing the value for service to the Lord.

  22. Reflections • “Singles” are a diverse group. • Single adults outnumber married couples in our country. • Some singles marry, some do not. • Singles are to be spiritual. • Singles minister & receive ministry.
