  1. SOUND

  2. What We’ve Got So Far • Sound Travels in Waves • Sound Is a Form of Energy • Sound Needs a Medium • Sound is Created by Vibrations

  3. Sound Wave Production • How are sound waves produced? • Compression-when air in front of an object is compressed causing higher air pressure. • Rarefaction-when the air behind an object is spread out causing a lower air pressure. • Combination of these two causes sound!!!

  4. What are sound waves? • Longitudinal waves-vibrations of air molecules are parallel to the wave motion. • Example

  5. Characteristics • Frequency determines pitch • How do you think frequency affects pitch? • It is a direct relationship.

  6. Characteristics • Speed of sound depends on the medium. • What do sounds travel faster through, solids, liquids or gases? Temperature? • They travel through solids faster. The closer the particles the easier to transfer energy.

  7. Characteristics • Sound Waves propagate in three dimensions.

  8. The Doppler Effect • What is the Doppler Effect? • Relative motion causes a change in frequency. If an object is moving towards you the frequency in greater if moving away the frequency is less. • Frequency shift named after Austrian physicist Christian Doppler (1803-1853)…The second greatest Austrian Ever.

  9. Review • In your book on page 413 problems 1-3, 5-7
