  1. Thinking about applying to graduate school? What can you do this summer to prepare?

Is graduate school for you? • What are your career goals? • Do you need to go to graduate school? • Graduate school is a huge investment • Potential 2-7 (or more) years • A lot of money • Time commitment (full time job) • Only 33% of undergrads went directly into a Ph.D. program (2011). • If you are feeling burnt out – think about postponing for a year • Don’t waste the year off!

  3. Sorting out the letters • M.S or M.A • 2 years, thesis • Can be a springboard into a doctoral program • Doctoral Degrees • 5-7 years (+ 1 year internship for clinical) • Ph.D. – doctor of philosophy • Research degree • Emphasized research and academic training • Clinical – trains for clinical practice as well • Psy.D. – doctor of psychology • Professional degree • Emphasizes clinical training – NOT research or teaching • More $, less financial support

  6. How to find information about programs? • Graduate Study in Psychology book • around $25 • updated every year • Online – visit the school’s online site • Talk to graduate students enrolled in the program – they can give you insider information / views on the program

  7. How to choose a Program • If it is a Ph.D. program that you are considering, can you get your Master’s Degree along the way? • If you are considering a clinical program, is it APA approved? • Is the school located in a place that you are willing to live for two to six years? • Are the research interests of the faculty compatible with yours? • What is the reputation of the department? • For information about the national rankings of various programs, visit the following website: http://www.socialpsychology.org/ranking.htm
