Blood Donation • A person can receive blood of any type for which they don’t produce antibodies against. • A person can donate blood to any type that does not produce antibodies against the protein present on the donated cells.
Example: Type O • Type O persons can only receive from Type O. • The plasma of a Type O person will contain both anti-A and anti-B antibodies. Therefore, if they are given A, B, or AB blood cells, the donated cells will clump together. Not good! • Type O persons are, however, “universal donors”. They can donate to all other types. • Since Type O cells don’t have either protein, there is nothing for the antibodies of the recipient to attack. No clumping.
