  2. Operation Ajax • Operation Ajax was an Anglo-American covert operation to overthrow the then-government of Iran and Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh and retain the Shah on the throne. • Mossadegh was acting like a Socialist and he tried to cut the US off from the Iranian oil supplies. • The main reason for the coup was an oil deal where the UK and the US divided Iranian oil. The US also set up a guerilla forces in case the Tudeh Party seized power as a result of the chaos created by Operation Ajax. • Operation Ajax was the first time the Central Intelligence Agency organized a plot to overthrow a democratically elected government. • Many historians argue that disagreements with the installed Shah led to the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979.

  3. Operation Ajax • Iran has not returned to democracy since Mossadegh's overthrow. • The leader of Operation Ajax was Kermit Roosevelt, Jr., a senior CIA agent, and grandson of the former President of the United States Theodore Roosevelt. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oi-JiM0Ox_8&feature=related • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mdeoktnv8ko&feature=fvw

  4. Operation Mockingbird • Operation PBSUCCESS was a CIA-organized covert operation that overthrew the democratically-elected President of Guatemala, Jacobo Arbenz Guzman in 1954. • Arbenz's government made a number of new policies that the US community thought to be Communist in nature. • They suspected that the Soviets were trying to make Guatemala a Soviet country. • Arbenz also instigated land reform acts that upset the US-based United Fruit Companies.

  5. Operation Mockingbird • The operation, which was put into motion early in 1952 and concluded in 1954. • The Operation planned to arm and train a group of 400 men under the control of exiled Guatemalan Colonel Officer Carlos Castillo. • Following closely with the CIA who installed the shah in Iran they developed there own ideas in Guatemala.

  6. Suez Canal Crisis • In 1956 the Suez Canal became the focus of a major world conflict. The canal represents the only means of travel between the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean. • It was vital for the flow of trade between Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the U.S. • The Egyptian government had just been taken over by Gamal Abdel Nasser who felt the canal should be under their own control. • The United States and Britain had promised to give aid to Egypt in the construction of the Asw_n Dam in the Nile. • Angry British and French politicians and joined forces with Israel and attacked the Nesser. Within 10 days the British and French occupied the whole Suez Canal. The Egyptians responded by sinking 40 ships and blocked all passage through the canal. • The UN salvage team went out to resolve the conflict and Britain and France both backed down. Control of the canal was given back to Egypt as long as they would permit all vessels free passage through it. • http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ops/suez.htm
