County Organizes Response Through Emergency Operations Center Columbia County Emergency Operations Center Provided leadership and coordination throughout the ice storm event Held update meetings twice daily Facilitated the National Incident Management System (NIMS) to mitigate the effects if the incident Maintained up-to-date status reports for the condition of utilities and roadways Networked through other state agencies to obtain the critical services needed within Columbia County during the incident Coordinated the needs of other important service providers during the event, such as: Columbia County Emergency Management Services, Columbia County Fire Coordinator, Columbia County 911 and the American Red Cross.
Columbia County Department of Public Works Picked-up and distributed cots, blankets and pillows to shelters at moments notice Picked-up and distributed dry ice and water to shelters and distribution points Picked-up generators and supplies from SEMO throughout the week Coordinated the hook-up of a generator for a family with special health needs Entire Highway Department worked Saturday & Sunday clearing County roads Highway Department assisted Towns in the County with local road clean-up Made fuel available for municipalities and not-for-profit agencies during power outage Provided daily updates of road conditions in Columbia County Provided school districts with information they needed to make decisions Assisted municipal water / wastewater facilities with generator failures Assisted Taghkanic Fire House with their generator failure Assisted Town of Germantown with wastewater pump station failure
Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Conducted health and welfare checks for residents with special needs Provided traffic control for down power lines and unsignalized intersections Provided security at shelters and warming stations Provided communications Assisted utility companies Safeguarded road hazards
Office For The Aging 323 recipients of Home Delivered Meals were contacted Health and Welfare visits scheduled if no answer Staff delivered shelf stable meals to recipients
County extends State of Emergency, two school districts remain closed
Thousands of Pounds of Dry Ice and Gallons of Water were provided To Storm Bound Residents Consumable Commodities Distributed During the period 12/12/08 – 12/18/08
NYSEG, Central Hudson and National Grid offers dry ice and water at local points
