  3. Human Resources • HR coordinates the activities of all the employees within a company • Determine the need for new employee • Find prospective employees • Interview • Train • Compensate • Dismiss • Health, Safety, Human Rights

  4. Determining Need • Look at the “labour market” • Where employers find employees • What skills does the company need? • What skills does the workforce have? • HR has to match the needs of the company with the skills of available workers • Employee turnover: rate at which employees are leaving the company (for any reason)

  5. Finds Possible Employees • HR can post jobs (advertise) to attract employees • Where do jobs get posted? • Candidates apply to the job by sending in a resume and application • HR can pay for a company to find the best candidate for the job • HEADHUNTERS

  6. Conducts an Interview • HR decides on the best applications; bring them in for an interview • HR and department manager interview candidate together • Is this candidate the right fit for our company? What is a job interview like?

  7. Training • After employee is hired, HR puts them through orientation • Meet co-workers • Tour the workplace • Learn the daily routine, operating rules, dress code, lunch breaks… • Learn to use any new equipment • HR also holds ongoing training for all employees

  8. Employees who Leave • Departures • Employee takes a new job somewhere else • HR can provide references, holds an exit interview • Dismissals • Employee is not fulfilling the job requirements • Corrective interview, then dismissal • Retirements • Employee leaves workforce forever

  9. Compensation HR ensures employees get paid the proper amount • Hourly wage • Paid a standard amount per each hour worked • Salary • Fixed income paid on a regular schedule (weekly, monthly, yearly) • Commission • Income is a percentage of the employees sales • Piecework • Paid based on how much work is completed ($1 for every chair built) • Contract • Fixed payment for clearly defined services

  10. Health, Safety, Human Rights • HR is responsible for ensuring the company maintains a safe workplace • Employee complaints are dealt with by HR as well • Discrimination • Abuse/Harassment • Unfair or unsafe working conditions
