Taipei • GDP $18,000 • Rich, and Industrialized- computers, scientific instruments, sports equipment • Big Trade partners with U.S.A, Japan, and China • 2 million people left to Taiwan after Communist took over in 1949 • Say are legitimate govt. of China- China says they are a province of China = Tension • Formally known as Formosa which means “beautiful island”
Japan • Tokyo • 100% • GDP $28,000 • 4 main islands, 3000 smaller ones • Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. • *70%* of Japan is mountainous. • Earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunami (big waves) • Mt. Fuji- Highest point, FILM • Japan Current warms Japan.
Japan Culture • tied to mainland- languages, religion, and political system. • *Shinto= Main religion* • **Shoguns-Military leader and samurai warriors. • *December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor* (U.S. enters WWII) • U.S. dropped 2 atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to end war. • Japan turned into a democracy after WWII • Meiji restoration=Modernization.

Korea • Divided into North and South Korea. • -1895- Japan took control of Korea, Annexed. • Made Korea a colony, control ended after WWII • divided on the 38th parallel. (Sov. Union=north / U.S. = south) - north Dem. Peoples Rep. of Korea (Communist) -south Rep. of Korea. • 1950 Korean War started, north invaded south • truce line was the 38th parallel. • July 27, 1953- armistice to stop fighting • Peace treaty was NEVER signed • 2 million died in the war.
