  1. Welcome to Miss Grant’s 2nd Grade Classroom Clark Elementary School Parents’ Open House July 30, 2012

  2. Meet Miss Grant I just graduated from Indiana University with a degree in both Special and Elementary Education. BUT, I am no stranger to Clark! I student taught with both Julie Wolfe (resource) and Jamie Clawson (first grade) last year. Along with graduating, I just recently ran my first mini marathon with my dad and we are currently training for the full marathon in November! YIKES! In December, I adopted a puppy and he takes up a wonderful but large amount of my free time. His name is Riley and he is a mix of German Sheppard and Blue Tick Healer. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone throughout the year and I cannot wait for the year to get underway! If you have any questions at all please do not hesitate to contact me. Welcome to second grade!

  3. Curriculum: The Daily Five and Words Their Way The Daily 5 is a series of literacy tasks (reading to self, reading with someone, listening to reading, writing, and word work) which students complete daily while the teacher meets with small groups or confers with individuals. • Words Their Way is an individualized word study program. • -Your child will have a collection of spelling words weekly that have been introduced in class. Each night of the week your child is expected to do a different activity to ensure that these words and the spelling principle they represent are mastered. These activities will be modeled and practiced in school, so your child can teach you how to do them.

  4. Writing Writing Block (6 + 1 Writing Traits) and Power Writing • During writing we will be doing mini lessons daily. Students will be using a journal to create stories. I will encourage each child to take a piece of writing from their journal to the publishing place once a month. Writing will also be incorporated into our Daily 5 time (during Daily 5 the students will be doing more of a journaling format). We will use additional time to focus on 6+1 Writing traits.

  5. Math We use the EnVision Math Program. EnVision is a new math program adopted by CPCSC last school year. There are a variety of online resources, hands on manipulatives, and many other wonderful resources. I will have a link soon on my website to the EnVision site so you will be able to explore! We will also be working on establishing Daily 5 flexible math groups later in the year.

These portfolios are notebooks that each student will use to collect work samples, to record the Common Core Standards, to list key vocabulary and create new learning goals. Your child will share his/her portfolio with you during conferences. Each child will need materials to create the portfolios. Materials that can be donated include; • 3-ring binder with clear plastic cover • 3 packs subject dividers (5 in a pack) • 1clear plastic sheet protectors.
