  3. General Characteristics Distribution – everywhere besides Antarctica or Greenland but fossils have been found there Tetrapods- 4 limbs Moist skin Many return to water to breed Ectothermic- “cold blooded” obtain their heat from the outside sources

  4. Amphibian Organ Systems • Skin = color is mostly camo • Skin glands • Hedonic gland- stimulates the female during courtship, located on chin of male • Mucous gland – produces mucopolysaccharides gives off slimy feel, keeps skin moist

  7. Digestive System Larval Frogs and Toads are Herbivores – plant eaters Larval and Adult Salamanders along with adult frogs and toads are Carnivores- meat eaters

  8. Order Anura (frogs and toads) Characteristics Tympanum – ear drum behind the eye Saltatory Locomotion – “Jump”

  9. Reproduction External Fertilization – outside of the body Amplexus – male climbs on females back and hangs on when she released eggs then he releases the sperm Direct Development – hatch out as mini adults

  10. Order Caudata • Characteristics • Body Shape – elongated body shape • Costal Grooves- line that run on the side of their bodies • 30-100 vertebrate • 1 cervical vertebrate – neck vertebrate • Locomotion • Mostly live in caves

  11. Reproduction Males will rub against the female, if she likes, he will climb on her back Rub his chin on her head Climb off the back walk in front of her Release his sperm and she will take it in through the cloaca – one opening for reproduction
