Cyber Attack (cont.) • Friday, July 12-0800: General strikes in Italy and France are expected to affect or close air traffic control in these countries for the day. • 0900: A report from Greek air traffic controllers announces that they can no longer monitor any flights over their country. A virus has somehow entered their computer system and rendered it useless. They are investigating.

3. Cyber Attack (cont.) • 0917: A similar report is received from the Czech Republic. • 0920; The U.K. announces that its entire air traffic control system is down. Requests alternative coverage for all of the hundreds of planes on the North Atlantic and European routes relying on its systems. • 0920-0930: Several more air traffic controllers across Europe report similar problems.

4. Cyber Attack (cont.) • 0935: The German newspaper Bild receives a report from a group identifying itself as “Friends of the People,” claiming it is well on the way to ending “ all flights polluting the earth,” announcing “the banks are next,” and promising an end to “so-called progress.”

5. Cyber Attack (cont.) • 0945: Reports are received from air traffic control centers in Finland, Turkey, and Kazakhstan that their air traffic control systems are down.
