  1. The name Tennis (English tennis) came from Fr. tenez, the imperative of the verb tenir, «to keep." It means"Hold!" This cry of player in tennis warned that he was going to serve. Racket (English racquet) is derived from the raquette, which comes from the Arabic rakhat, meaning "hand"; Tennis

  2. In 1899 four students of Harvard University invented the idea of holding a tennis tournament, which involved national teams. One of them - Dwight Davis, developed a scheme for the tournament, and bought his own money prize for the winner - a silver cup. The first tournament was held in Brooklyn, Massachusetts in 1900 Wimbledon

  3. In 1954 James Van Alen opened the International Tennis Hall of Fame - the museum, located in Newport. The museum contains a large number of exhibits depicting the history of tennis as well as gallery of great tennis players and people who contributed to the development of sports.
