  4. Olweus Anti-Bullying Rules We will not bully others. We will try to help students who are bullied. We will try to include students who are left out. If we know that someone is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and at home.

  5. SPOT Binder Please check your child’s SPOT binder every night and sign the parent communication box. SPOT binders need to be returned to school everyday. Check binder for school notes, homework, and completed work.

  6. Snacks We will have a WORKING snack in the afternoon. Snack should be healthy and easy to eat. Students can bring a water bottle. Some classes are nut-free zones. Lunch tables are divided into nut/ nut-free zones.

  7. Volunteering Teacher Workroom Assistants. Weekly Reading Folder volunteers. There will be a brief orientation on the procedures. Homeroom Mom (I still need 1  ) Party Helpers Track & Field Day Weekly Reader/Mystery Reader

  9. Balanced Literacy • Taught through a combination of instructional methods – targeted instruction and Daily Five • Phonics taught to help with spelling patterns • Integrated LA approach is woven into reading program to teach sight words, word attack strategies, and comprehension. • Houghton Mifflin Harcourt is the district-wide adopted reading curriculum which incorporates reading, writing, and phonics.

  10. Spelling and Writing English spelling is weird…or is it wierd? -Irwin Hill

  11. Spelling • Students will take a weekly spelling test. These will not start until mid-September. • Words are taken from recently learned phonics skills and word work patterns. • Challenge words and sentence dictation will start after Winter Break.

  12. Writing • Primary emphasis will be on thought and content rather than spelling and mechanics. • Students will be encouraged to use inventive spelling. • Writing is based on student experiences. • We use the Four Square Writing Strategy. • Handwriting is a big part of 1st grade.

  13. Mathematics • Manipulatives will be used as well as papers and pencils to reinforce skills. • New math adoption and resources • Math Targeted Instruction

Destination Imagination Teams are established based on grade levels, kindergarten through 2nd grade will make up Early Development while 3rd grade through 5th grade will be presented with several challenges in which they will apply their imagination and innovation to solve a particular challenge.

  17. Destination Imagination Students will be able to learn new creative ways to solve these challenges; thus, they learn to work together, solve problems effectively and most importantly, develop mutual respect for other students whose ideas may be different from their own.

  18. Destination Imagination If you would like for your child to participate in the DI program for this year, please complete a registration sheet. Each team must have a parent volunteer. We encourage anyone who would like to help make this program a success this year to please sign up! All registration sheets must be turned in no later than September 19th.

Homework • 10 minutes of nightly reading practice is a priority! • Study spelling lists when the tests begin • Math homework will be sent home 3-4 times a week. • Differentiated reading homework will be sent home towards the end of September • Incomplete classwork may be sent home for homework • Optional-Mariner Math

  21. Requesting Work During Student Absence When a student is absent, it is important that the student takes the responsibility to see that all projects, essays, research projects and other assignments are completed and turned in to the teacher. The work must be turned in at a time specified by teacher. Makeup Requests: For absences of three or more days, makeup work may be obtained through the office. Allow 24 hours notice for work to be collected.

  22. Grading Policy There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children. One of these is roots; the other, wings. -Hodding Carter

  23. Grading • We use a “Skills-Based Report Card.” • Foundation course skills will be reported with a 3, 2, or 1 based on the level at which the skill has been mastered. • A grade of 3 means that the student is consistently demonstrating mastery of skill AT standard expectations (Expected Standard). • A grade of 2 means that the child almost has the skill mastered and is still working on it. • A grade of 1 means that the child is having difficulty mastering the skill and is receiving extra help in the classroom.

  25. Communication • Your child will bring home a binder everyday (SPOT). • Please check the binder for important teacher communication. • Please check your teacher’s webpage. • Email is the best form of communication. • Conference time is 12:55-1:45

  26. Transportation If there will be a change in how your child is going home, please send a signed note or notify Ms. Kenley by email before 1:00. Please include as much information as possible. If you e-mail and don’t have a response by 1:30, please call the office.

  27. Transportation • Make sure to have your visor number visible for car rider pickup. • If you are getting out of your car to get your child, your child needs to be an escorted walker. Escorted walkers are picked up on the side entrance on Trophy Drive. • Older siblings wait with younger siblings for car pick up.

  28. T-shirt Order Form Please turn in your t-shirt order form and $8 if you have not done so already.

  29. Back to School Picnic Thursday, September 18th 5:30- 7:30 If you wish to purchase dinners, return an order form, with payment to your teacher or the front office by 9/12/14.
