  1. Miss Flaherty’s Weekly News • Week of September 2nd Classroom Notes: Thank you for a wonderful first full week with you children! I look forward to seeing them grow academically and getting to know them! In order for your child to be successful in our classroom he or she needs to complete their work on time. We have already had a lot of late assignments. Please look over your child’s homework and agenda to make sure their homework is completed. You can also check the homework section on our class website for homework to be updated daily. September Birthday’s: Kendall (12th), Allyson (15th), Connor T. 2. What’s Happening • Reading – We will be focusing on reading genres and non-fiction reading strategies. • Spelling – This is our off week for Spelling. We will resume Spelling next week. • Writing/Grammar/Vocabulary –We started the year off introducing our writing and grammar notebook and briefly introducing the 6+1 Traits of Writing. We will continue to focus on what makes a complete sentence and the different types of sentences. There will be an end of the unit test at the completion of the unit. We have also been enhancing our writing with 64 box words! • Science – I plan on introducing students to scientific tools this week.  I will prepare several “science stations” that include activities that will help the students manipulate each tool and practice their measurement skills.  Students will also be introduced to the scientific method and the science process skills over the next few weeks. I have planned a fun experiment that involves Skittles (and the scientific method, or course)!  Who knew science could be this much fun!  Be prepared for a small quiz over the scientific method, measurement skills, and tools early next week!! ~Mrs. Ortiz • Math – In math, our focus is geometry. We will be looking at lines, rays, points, and shapes of various kinds. Lots of new math words will be introduced such as perpendicular, parallel, and intersecting. After a few weeks, we will be designing a geometry poster to showcase what we have learned. ~Mrs. Wentz • Indiana History and Health –We are incorporating a study of non-fiction reading strategies and health this first nine weeks.  I am so excited to teach the kids how to use the text features in their books to increase their understanding of the content.  Some terms that your student may start using are:  Title, Heading, Subheading, Bolded Words, Highlighted Words, Glossary, and Bulleted Points.  For our content end we are study the Health Pyramid, Wellness, and Good Character.  We will not have a health quiz on lessons one and two.  I want to ease the kids into the idea of incorporating reading and health.  If you ever have any questions about your child’s health grades please feel free to contact me via email for the quickest response. ~Mrs. Fritz • Please contact me if you have any questions, comments, or concerns...or just to say, "Hello!" cflaherty@cps.k12.in.us  or 663-8800 Ext. 14207 • Miss Flaherty
