  9. Cross media publishing: Definition and problem statement The Project • Cross media publishing is understood as acquisition, processing, aggregation and delivery of multiple media types using multiple media channels for commercial and public service purposes • Interoperability across media types and channels over the life cycle and value chains is an overarching challenge • Infrastructures which support interoperability (across interfaces) are needed for flexible operations and services Cross Media Publishing Project

  10. Cross media publishing: Objective The Project Research goal is to develop interoperable infrastructures to support • Next generation editorial systems (TKK) • Flexible supply chain management (VTT) • Applying hybrid media – case learning (KCL) (these objectives translate into 3 sub projects) The infrastructures concerned are primarily content-based (and in the case of hybrid media also channel-based) Cross Media Publishing Project

  11. Cross media publishing: Content-based infrastructure The Project Knowledge Data related for instance to the topic of the content or any other data which is external to the content Metadata Data related to the content supporting resource discovery, processing, aggregation, DRM and delivery Content Formats for content Cross Media Publishing Project

  12. Next generation editorial systems: TKK Motivation Sub Project 1 • Competitiveness of professional media requires new approaches to content acquisition and management • Systematic planning of editorial work on different timescales is becoming increasingly vital • Specific frameworks and architectures for metadata and knowledge are being developed in the audio-visual domain to manage existing assets => TKK will address planning and knowledge in editorial practices Cross Media Publishing Project

  13. Next generation editorial systems: Focus TKK Sub Project 1 TKK will focus on planning and knowledge in editorial practices Focus metadata metadata external knowledge digital content Web service? Planning Acquisition, Capture, Shooting, Writing Aggregation, Delivery, Interaction ? ? Cross Media Publishing Project

  14. Next generation editorial systems: Research problem Sub Project 1 • What metadata is needed for flexible cross-media (across content providers, types of content and channels) interoperability? • How to describe content which does not exist but of which knowledge exists? • How to attach external knowledge to content? Cross Media Publishing Project

  15. Next generation editorial systems: TKK Tasks Sub Project 1 • Compile inventory of metadata needs in editorial operations across media and content provider • Assess description relative to existing resource description frameworks and vocabularies • Identify use of external and internal knowledge in planning of media product issues (pre-content stage) • Build a framework for representation of knowledge used in planning of media product issues • Assess technologies for offering knowledge-based services • Build and test demonstrator system for some knowledge based planning task Cross Media Publishing Project

  16. Next generation editorial systems: TKK Deliverables Sub Project 1 Deliverables on planning and knowledge in editorial practices • Short term • Shared metadata practices for new media types and content sources • Long term • Principle for managing content from conception of idea (pre-content stage) until final content Expected Company Benefits • Use of existing knowledge of media assets in different life-cycle stages in a way which reduces costs and improves content quality • Efficient re-use of content • “Structuring the chaos” Cross Media Publishing Project

  18. Flexible supply chain management: Motivation Sub Project 2 • Media products will be produced in operational networks where the supply chain should be flexible and configurable • The flow of specifications and data from the very 1st workflow step through the chain should be controlled to reduce errors • The processes should be traceable and transparent and enable optimization • The operational networks should allow case specific workflows between different actors to produce customized products Cross Media Publishing Project

  19. Flexible supply chain management: Research problem Sub Project 2 • What metadata is needed for flexible supply chain management? • What kind of interfaces between different companies are required to allow plug and play networking? • How to enable optimization, check that deadlines will be met and reschedule or reprioritize tasks when needed • How to provide global status information of the processes in production networks • How to manage capacity and resources in production networks Cross Media Publishing Project

  20. Flexible supply chain management: Tasks Sub Project 2 • Compile inventory of metadata needs in operational networks for newspapers, magazines, books and other printed products • Describe interfaces between different companies using relevant resource description frameworks and vocabularies • Build a simulator to optimize and track production networks • Build and test demonstrator system for some flexible supply chain allowing capacity and resource management Cross Media Publishing Project

  21. Applying Hybrid Media: Motivation Sub Project 3 • There is great potential to develop new, effective media-applications by combining the strengths of print and digital media. • Combining the knowledge and efforts among companies related to Tivit and Forest Cluster it is possible to create unique concepts, products and service concepts difficult to mimic by others. • Context of learning is a good area for applying hybrid media because of several reasons. The knowledge, applications and technological solutions can be applied in other end product areas. • The expertise related to the utilization of Hybrid Media in learning and in other end uses will open new export opportunities to Finnish ICT, paper and publishing -industries.
