  1. Secondary Cells and Fuel Cells To Wing Yin F.6B (11)

  2. Secondary cells • A secondary cell is any kind of electrolytic cell in which the electrochemical reaction that releases energy is reversible. • Rechargeable • eg. Lead-acid cell, lithium battery

  3. Application of Lead-acid cell • Automotive and traction applications. • Standby/Back-up/Emergency power for electrical installations. • Submarines • Sealed battery types available for use in portable equipment

  4. Lithium ion battery • rechargeable • Use in portable consumer electronics equipment such as cameras, camcorders, electric razors

  5. Lithium polymer batteries • rechargeable batteries which have technologically evolved from lithium ion batteries • often called Solid State cells because there's no liquid • long storage lives, but low discharge rates. • Used in PDAs and laptop computers

  6. Fuel Cell • A fuel cell is an electrochemical energy conversion device. • Consists of 2 electrodes and electrolyte. • consume reactants which must be replenished. • Many combinations of fuel and oxidant are possible such as oxygen and hydrogen.

  7. How Fuel Cell works?

  8. Fuel cell Application • combined heat and power (CHP) system • high efficiency • silent operation • mobile equipment such as phones and "laptop" computers • electric vehicles • spacecraft
