Solutions - Chapter 14 • What makes up a solution? (Sol’n) • Solvent – component in greater amount • Solute – component in lesser amount Solution has the phase of the solvent
Types of Solutions How many of the following types of solutions can not exist?
Types of Solutions All of these exist!
Types of Solutions We will mostly focus on liquid as the solvent. Remember, we have already talked about gases mixing.
Let’s look at solubility of materials in liquids Solubility – how much solute will dissolve
Effect of Pressure • How will an increase in the pressure of a gas effect the solubility (s) of a gas in a liquid? • The solubility will increase. • The solubility will remain constant • The solubility will decrease.
Henry’s Law As P increases, solubility increases! Sg = kHPg (Henry’s Law) demo Pressure does not significantly effect the solubility of solids or liquids!
The “Bends” When a diver goes down, the pressure increases so solubility goes up. Coming back up the pressure goes down so the solubility goes down (gas comes out of solution.)
Effect of Temperature on Gas Solubility • How will an increase in the temperature of a solution effect the solubility (s) of a gas dissolved in the liquid? • The solubility will increase. • The solubility will remain constant • The solubility will decrease. demo
