  2. Who Is Charles Sheldon? • Charles M. Sheldon was a protestant minister, author, peace advocate, and a loyal member of Protestantism's reformist faction. • Sheldon’s largest accomplishment was his book In His Steps, which was the second best selling book in the United States for 60 years. In His Steps is the origin of the popular phrase, “What would Jesus do?”

  3. Background • Charles was born on February 26,1857 in Wellsville, New York. His father, Stewart Sheldon was a minister. Sheldon’s parents were supporters of the temperance movement and Charles signed a pledge never to use alcohol or tobacco at age seven. • Charles graduated from Brown University in 1883, and Andover Theological Seminar in 1886. He was first hired by a church in Vermont but later moved to Topeka, Kansas.

In His Steps • In His Steps was about a town that pledged to live for a year as Jesus would. • It was originally published serially in 1896, the next year it was printed in book form. • The phrase “What would Jesus do?” went on to be a popular Christian motto appearing on bracelets, t-shirt etc. • Sales for In His Steps have been estimated anywhere from 10 to 20 million dollars.
