What would happen before the Messiah came? “Behold I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes. And he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the land with a curse.” Malachi 4:5-6
What was the mission of John the Baptist? “And he [John] will turn the hearts of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God, and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, . . . to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.” Luke 1:14-17
“And you child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways.”Luke 1:76 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came for testimony to bear witness to the light, that all might believe through him. John 1:6-8
John’s mission • To prepare the people for the Messiah by calling them to repentance and baptism • To tell everyone that Jesus was the Messiah so that they would believe in him and follow him • To be Jesus’ chief disciple and supporter

The forerunner In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Matthew 3:1-2
John was highly respected As the people were in expectation, and all men questioned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he were the Christ, John answered them all, “I baptise you with water; but he who is mightier than I is coming, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” Luke 3:15-15
John denies being the Elijah And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” He confessed, he did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” John 1:19-21
John testifies to Jesus • “Behold the lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world.” John 1: 29 • “And I have seen and borne witness that this is the Son of God.” John 1: 34
What should have happened next? • John should have become Jesus’ chief disciple • The Jewish people and leaders would have accepted Jesus as the Messiah • The prophecies in Isaiah would have been realised • The kingdom of God would have been established

What did happen? • John did not follow Jesus • So Jesus took responsibility for John’s failure and restored his mission
Why didn’t John follow Jesus? • Own concept of the messiah • “He who comes after me the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” John 1:27 • Couldn’t recognise Jesus was the messiah • “I myself did not know him.”John 1:33 • Knew about Jesus’ family background • Didn’t imagine sharing Jesus’ future • “He must increase but I must decrease.” John 3:30 • Didn’t act on the inspiration and it faded

Jesus is tempted by Satan • Third Temptation Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! Jesus restores John’s mission • Jesus found his own disciples • He preached the same message as John: “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”Matthew 4:17 Jesus calling his disciples
Jesus baptises Jesus and his disciples went into the land of Judea; there he remained with them and baptised. John was also baptising at Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there; and people came and were baptised. John 3:22-23
Rivalry between Jesus and John Now when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptising more disciples than John . . . he left Judea and departed again to Galilee. John 4:1-3
What happened to John? Herod had seized John and bound him in prison, for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife; because John said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” Matthew 14:3-4 John in prison
Galilean Spring And he went about all Galilee teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people. Matthew 4:23
The people accept Jesus And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and from beyond the Jordan. Matthew 4: 25
Wanted to make Jesus ‘king’ When the people saw the sign which he had done, they said, “This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world.” Perceiving that they were about to came and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew. John 6:14-15
Sermon on the Mount And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes. Matthew 7:28-29
Jesus did miracles “That you might know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins” – he then said to the paralytic – “Rise, take up your bed and go home.” Matthew 9:6
