Basic data on tobacco in Ukraine • Adult smoking prevalence, daily • Male – 58%, female – 14% (ADIC, 2001) • No reliable government data available • Premature deaths from tobacco • 100,000 a year (Peto, 2000) • Majority of Ukrainian smokers want to quit • 65% of smokers want to quit (ADIC, 2001)

  3. Basic data on tobacco in Ukraine Government tax revenue from tobacco • 830m UAH or 160m USD (State Tax Administration, 2003) • No tax on tobacco until 1993 • Price and tax per pack of 20 cigarettes • 2.2 UAH or 0.4 USD price per pack • Tax is 32% of the price

  4. Basic data on tobacco in Ukraine • Smuggling of tobacco out of Ukraine is much higher than smuggling of tobacco into Ukraine • 20b cigarettes excess in 2003 • Around 5,500 people are employed in tobacco industry in Ukraine (State Statistics Committee, 2002)
