  2. Education/Training necessary for the Job A high school diploma or a GED is required in some states, also required is that you complete a program in a State-licensed barber or cosmetology school. All states require a barber or cosmetologist to be licensed. Full-time programs in barbering and cosmetology will last around 9 months and could head towards an associate degree. A lot of professionals take advanced courses in hairstyling to keep up with the latest trends.

  3. Job skills, talents, and experiences necessary If you work on people’s personal appearance, you should have a sense of fashion, art, and technical design. You must also keep yourself looking well put together and have a clean work area.

  4. Earnings In May 2008 it was recorded that the hourly wage for hairdressers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists, with tips and commission, was $11.13. 50 percent earned between $8.57 and $15.03. The lowest percent earned less than $7.47, the highest earned more than $20.41. Earnings for hairdressers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists is usually is low but with the right training and experience. There are a few other things that will make a difference in your income, such as the size and location of the salon and the personal appearances’ of their workers.

  5. Benefits/Health Care/Vacation The health care and benefits depend on where you are working. If you are working in a higher clientele your benefits will be greater. The longer you’ve been at the salon the more vacation days you get, but in few cases that isn't the case.

  6. Employment Outlook Hairstylists and cosmetologist work will grow by 20 percent from 2008 to 2018, which is faster than the normal for all jobs. Job opportunities usually good for licensed personal appearance workers. Competition for jobs and clients at higher paying salons, you must have experience working in a higher paying salon. It is hard to get started in this.

  7. Advancement Opportunities Overall employment of hairstylists, cosmetologists, and other personal appearance workers is expected to grow much faster than the average for all careers through 2018, but the amount of growth will vary by specialty. As hairstylists and cosmetologists become more experienced and gain a following, their earnings will increase. Some manage salons or decide to open their own.

  8. Typical Day The day starts with getting up around 7:30am. And arriving at work between 8:45 and 9:00am. Once there you clean, vacuum, check phone messages, organize the day’s music, organize towels and capes, disinfect combs and other equipment. The rest of the day is filled with cutting, coloring, shampooing, and styling people’s hair.

  9. Aptitude This career will require lots of practice and dedication, as do most jobs. Job opportunities for cosmetologists are great, employers say that it is difficult to keep up with the growing demand for hairstylists and other personal appearance workers. It is easier to be self employed for more flexible hours and more money.
