Today’s Session Introduction Aims of the session: To talk openly about the opportunities available to girls in STEM subjects and careers, as well as the values and opinions in our society which make it harder for girls to fulfil their potential in science, technology and mathematics.
Agenda Today we will cover: Stereotypes in our society One approach from the EU commission Discussion about prejudiced comments Importance of role models Learn about careers in STEM Share resources you can use in the classroom
Task 1: We want your ideas! Discuss the video – good things, bad things Discuss the quiz and the answers All through this session, write your good ideas on how to make a difference on your sticky notes. We will be discussing them at the end of the workshop!
Task 2: Comments for discussion Discuss within your group Q: How would you respond to these comments?Q: How do you think these opinions came about? “What do you want to go into technology for? It will be full of geeks” “My mum says that she was useless at physics, so I don’t expect I will take it at A-level”
And Finally….share your ideas! What can we do to help encourage girls to go into STEM subjects and careers? How do we help them stay in those careers?
Your future is not just what the magazines print! Aim high! Be Yourself!
