  2. Daoud before the Coup • Daoud was appointed Prime Minister of Afghanistan in 1953 by his cousin(brother in law) Zahir Shah. • Under his influence Afghanistan grew closer to U.S.S.R. • Tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan forced Daoud to resign in 1963.

  3. Shah Conflict • Shah conflict was a bloodless coup staged by Daoud to overthrow his cousin(brother-in-law) to seize power.

  4. Factors that led to the Coup • Zahir Shah’s “New Democracy” promised so much but delivered so little

  5. New Government • Daoud Khan established a republic and named himself president of Afghanistan first time ever in Afghanistan history.

  6. Who supported Daoud Khan • Daoud Khan was supported by the Soviet Union in his takeover of Afghanistan. • He also received support from Khalqi and Parchami factions of the PDPA.

  7. Daoud Connections • He got connections from the Soviet Union they sent weapons and trained the Afghanistan military. • He also had ties with Egypt who trained the officers in the military after he started to distance from U.S.S.R.

  8. Impact on Afghan People • Schools were being built, women were started getting rights, and literacy rate increased from 2%. • More hospitals were built, doctors rate increased, and so did the country’s healthcare system.

  9. Population divided in leadership • Religious leaders didn’t like the fact that he was working towards having women’s face unveiled. • The population became divided because the Afghan communist didn’t like the fact that he was distancing the country from soviet union and westernizing it.

  10. Downfall of Daoud • The funeral of Mir Akbar Khyber served as a rallying point for Afghan Communist(PDPA). • Afghan police force being trained by Egypt which angered U.S.S.R. • Shocked Daoud orders arrest on the PDPA leaders but too late. • April 27 Saur revolution takes place and Daoud Khan along with some family members are murdered.
