  4. I. There will be a Separation • Death - means separation • God created man with a soul – Gen. 2:7 • Body + Soul = Life Ps. 139:13 • Sin ~ expelled from Garden of Eden – Gen. 2:17; Rom. 5:12 • What is death?

  5. I. There will be a Separation “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.” Jas. 2:26 “That separation of the soul from the body by which the life on earth is ended.” [Thayers] Gen. 35:18 “as her soul was departing.” Luke 23:46 “gave up the ghost”

There will be a Separation • “For dust you are, And to dust you shall return.” Gen. 3:19 • “Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.” Eccl. 12:7 • In that first minute after death the soul and body become separated from each other ! • What happens to the soul / spirit?

  7. II. There Will be an Escort for the Spirit • Some have the idea that the soul wanders around -- “ghosts” • “And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom” Luke 16:22 • no chance of altering destiny – Heb. 9:27

  8. III. There Will be an Assignment • Our soul will be in Hades • “Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.” Luke 23:43 • Jesus died – buried – resurrected • Where was His soul ???

There Will be an Assignment “For You will not leave my soul in Hades, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. v. 31 “he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption” Acts 2:27; 31 Hades = the realm of the dead, place where our spirits go to await the resurrection

  11. IV. There will be an Awareness • Luke 16 • We will know what is happening • Consciousness after death • Able to: • Recognize people – v. 23 • Remember our former life – v. 28 • Regret • Rejoice
