Motivating employees Chapter 17 – Store Management Submitted by Stacia Wakeley
What motivates you?? • It’s different for every person, so the first step is to find out what motivates your employees! • Keep in mind that money is not always a primary motivator!
Everyday workplace motivators Good Bad • Praise • Acknowledgement • Recognition • Small gifts/items (use with caution, and make rewards consistent with all employees) • $$$ (Unless bonuses are a part of your salary, such as commission) • Large gifts (vacations, expensive items, etc.) Once you start rewarding employees with monetary items, the expectations grow that each time they do something well, their reward should be bigger than the last!
Setting goals • Make them realistic!Setting a goal outside of one’s reach can be discouraging. • Involve employees in goal-setting!When an employee is involved in setting their own goals, they have some ownership to them and will feel better about succeeding. • Individualize!Make goals that are specific to each person’s experience and confidence. Goals are a great way to motivate employees. Here are a few goal-setting tips that will help motivate your employees:
Maintaining morale • COMMUNICATE with employees! When they know what’s going on with the business (good or bad), then rumors and speculation decrease and morale can be maintained. • CLEAN HOUSE! Use proper discipline for employees that aim to harm the business and its employees. People cannot provide quality work in an environment that allows them to be harrassed.
So what motivates me? • A great grade in this class! • A summer away from school and projects! Have a great summer!
