  2. What is the heart? • Your heart is an organ that supplies blood and oxygen throughout your entire body. • It is the size of your clenched fist. • The heart weighs the same as about two deck of cards.

  3. Where is the heart located? • The heart is located on the Left side of your chest.

  4. Blood is pumped away from the heart through your arteries, and veins pump blood back to your heart. • Your heart pumps blood throughout your entire body, through your veins!

  5. What is Pulse? • Your pulse is a rhythmic contraction and expansion of the arteries with each beat of the heart. • When your heart beats faster, your pulse will be faster too such as while exercising • http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/gamesactivities/keephealthy.html

  6. Ever noticed how you get warmer while exercising? • Does anyone know what oxygen is? • This is because your brain needs oxygen and so your heart will beat faster to pump new blood into your brain and throughout your body.

  7. How your blood receives more oxygen • All your blood enters the right side of the heart through 2 veins. The Superior Vena Cava (SVC) and the Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) • After the blood enters the heart, it then pumps into your lungs to get oxygen then goes to the left side to be returned to the body full of oxygen.

  8. Let’s feel our pulse again • Is it fast or slow? • Is it faster or slower than before? • We are also warmer now since the blood is flowing faster through our bodies

  9. Our pulse • It may be faster now, since we just did Jumping Jacks, on average the heart beats 72 beats/minute at a resting state. • The resting state will change as we get older

  10. What is Heart Disease? • Heart disease, also called cardiovascular disease, mainly affects older people and means that there are problems with the heart and blood vessels.
