  2. Warm Up • Write a homework reminder – get it stamped! • Update your Table of Contents for today! • Answer the following with your table partner: • What percentage of Earth is covered in water? • What percentage of that is salt vs. fresh? • Where is most of Earth’s fresh water located?

QUICK REVIEW: • What were some obvious & not so obvious sources of water? • Oceans, lakes, rivers, streams, ponds, swamps, puddles, aquifers, icebergs, clouds, underground reservoirs, glaciers, in the human body etc. • Where does all the water come from??? • The WATER CYCLE • What makes water so unique?

  4. Water: Where Does it Come From, Where Does it Go? Drainage is most related to the runoff portion of the water cycle…what can happen when water runs off? All water sources are connected through the WATER CYCLE… But water sources are also connected through something called DRAINAGE…

  7. Drainage Basins/Watersheds An area of land where all water flows to a central river and then eventually to the ocean But how does it know which way to go? Divide = ridge of land from which water will flow in different directions (from high elevation to low; gravity also plays a role)

Watershed Activity: • Create your group’s village on the white piece of paper showing the following things: • Black marker: main streets and buildings • Blue marker: rivers or creeks • Green marker: grass and trees • Brown marker: exposed soil that could erode • Red marker: pollutants from cars, people, and animals • Crumple up piece of paper & open to represent your village • Add water source with mist of water!

  10. Watershed Discussion: • If this is a model of a watershed… • What do the creases in the paper represent? • What happens to the ink from the markers as the water flows? • Where will the water/ink eventually go? Highest or lowest place? • Are there any problems you see with this watershed?

  12. Groundwater: Ever dig a hole at the beach and hit water? • Groundwater: • is water that soaks into the soil and collects underground • Water Table: • - the top layer of • ground water

  13. How does the water get in TO the ground?

  14. Groundwater: Through ___________, water soaks into the ground, but groundwater can only occur closer to the Earth’s surface. Why? It can only get so far into the ground before it hits bedrock…

  15. Groundwater occurs in the layers of the Earth where there are spaces between the rock. Permeable: Impermeable: A substance that does NOT allow water to flow through it solid rock • A substance that allows water to flow through it • loose rock & sediment

  18. Groundwater is stored in AQUIFERS… Water from aquifers is considered to be very clean…why would the water in an aquifer so clean? • Aquifer: • A permeable rock layer that stores water and allows water to flow through it

  20. Groundwater Comes Back Up to the Surface! • Spring: • Water that naturally flows out of the ground because it is below the water table • Well: • A hole in the ground that reaches down to the groundwater in aquifers - Can be natural or synthetic

Explain the journey you take through the water cycle and what is happening to you along the way. • Must include AT LEAST 4 steps from the water cycle & 6 other vocabulary words from below… • Polarity, adhesion, cohesion, density, buoyancy, specific heat, universal solvent, watershed, groundwater, water table, aquifer, spring, well, permeable, impermeable AND the steps of the water cycle. • UNDERLINE THE VOCABULARY WORDS!

HOMEWORK • First EOG Review Booklet Checkpoint will be NEXT CLASS!: • You should have AT LEAST one full unit done by now…more is even better! • Remember, 5 units in 5 weeks = about 1 unit per week • If you are making progress this should be an easy grade! • Remember, the checkpoint day is also an opportunity to ask questions!
