  2. Reflexive verbs • In this presentation, we are going to look at a special group of verbs called reflexives. • Let’s start out by thinking of the English verb wash. List several things that you can wash.

  3. Some examples • I wash my clothes. • I wash the dishes. • I wash the car. • I wash the windows. • I wash my hands. • I wash my hair. • I wash my face.

  4. What’s the difference? • I wash my clothes. I wash the dishes. I wash the car. I wash the windows. • I can wash things that are not part of me. That is , not attached to my body. • In Spanish, we say: Lavo la ropa. Lavo los platos. Lavo el coche. Lavo las ventanas.

  5. …and… • I wash my hands. I wash my hair. I wash my face. • I also wash thing that are attached to my body – hands, face, hair • In Spanish, we say Me lavo las manos. Me lavo el pelo. Me lavo la cara

  6. So… • Lavo la ropa. • Lavo los platos. • Lavo el coche. • Lavo las ventanas. • Me lavo las manos. • Me lavo el pelo. • Me lavo la cara. • If you are washing something that is attached. You need to add the word “me”

  7. Huh? • There are two ways to talk about washing in Spanish. • Lavar: to wash something else • Lavarse: to wash part of one’s body

  8. Lavarse • Is a reflexive verb. • The –se at the end let’s you know it is a reflexive verb. • How do you use a reflexive verb????

  9. 1st: the reflexive pronouns agree with the subject: • Yo = me • Tú = te • Ud. = se • Él = se • Ella = se • Nosotros = nos • Uds. = se • Ellos = se • Ellas = se

  10. 2nd: The reflexive pronoun goes immediately before the conjugated verb or after and attached to the infinitive, present progressive, or affirmative command.

  11. 3rd: the verb conjugates as it normally would conjugate.

  12. So… • Take the verb….lavarse • Drop the se……lavar • Move it to the front of the conjugated verb • lavar • Change to agree with subject & conjugate the verb • Yo lavo se se se me

  29. Now what about those irregular verbs??? • Ponerse (to put on) • Dormirse (to fall asleep) • Despertarse (to wakeup) • Vestirse (to dress oneself) • Desvestirse (to undress oneself) • Sentarse (to sit down) • Acostarse (to go to bed)

  30. Ponerse • Poner is a go-go verb. • Which means it’s ending changes to –go in the yo form, but conjugates like a regular –er verb with all the other subject pronouns. • Pongo Ponemos • Pones • Pone Ponen

  34. These are stem-changing boot verbs. • Do you remember • Jugar u > ue • Querer e > ie • Poder o > ue • Remember these change in the stem of the verb in the boot. The verb outside the boot does not change.

  36. Querer (to want) quiero queremos quieres quiere quieren

  37. Poder(to be able to;can) puedo podemos puedes puede pueden
