  1. Introduction to Natural Resources

  2. What is a natural resource? • A source of supply or support in nature which can be used by people in order to function

  3. Common Classifications of Resources • Renewable—Regenerated in nature • Non-Renewable—Exists in a fixed quantity OR regenerates at a rate far below the rate of usage. • Potentially Renewable—Can regenerate in nature IF it is not consumed at such a fast rate.

  4. What do you think? Rate how well you agree with this statement: Compared to other people in this class, I use more natural resources. 1 = strongly agree 2 = agree 3 = neutral 4 = disagree 5 = strongly disagree

  5. What do you think? Rate how well you agree with this statement: Compared to other people in the USA, I use more natural resources. 1 = strongly agree 2 = agree 3 = neutral 4 = disagree 5 = strongly disagree

  6. What do you think? Rate how well you agree with this statement: Compared to other people in the world, I use more natural resources. 1 = strongly agree 2 = agree 3 = neutral 4 = disagree 5 = strongly disagree

  7. What do you think? Rate how well you agree with this statement: I probably could make some changes to the way that I live in order to reduce the number of resources I use without drastically changing my quality of life. 1 = strongly agree 2 = agree 3 = neutral 4 = disagree 5 = strongly disagree

  8. What do you think? Rate how well you agree with this statement: Compared to people who lived in the USA 30 years ago, people today use more resources. 1 = strongly agree 2 = agree 3 = neutral 4 = disagree 5 = strongly disagree

  9. 1) Why does our personal usage of resources matter?2) Is it OK for people to use however many resources they want? • Brainstorm with your table • Be prepared to share with the rest of the class

  10. Today’s activity will help us develop answers to the questions you were just asked. We will do this by using a survey to get a rough idea of how many resources we consume. Fill out the first column as best you can based upon the way you live. Then go back and look at any things you would be willing to change

  11. Your HW is to administer the survey you will take in class today to a parent or some other adult. Then you will have that person think back to when they were your age and have them re-answer the questions. Then you will answer the given questions at the bottom of the survey.
