  2. Multiple Intelligences • Many of theories on intelligence exist. One of the most prominent is Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences. • This theory suggests. • All people possess at least 7 if not more unique intelligences. • Not limited to these 7

  3. The Intelligences • Linguistic • words and language • understands relationship between communication and meaning. • How to include this style in teaching (tasks) • write a set of instructions • speak on a subject • edit a written piece or work • Can you think of one more?

  4. The Intelligences • Logical-Mathematical • numbers and logic • detecting patterns • scientific reasoning and deduction • perform mathematical calculations • Tasks • perform a mental arithmetic calculation • create a process to measure something difficult • analyze how something works

  5. The Intelligences • Musical • music, sounds, rhythm • awareness, appreciation and use of sound • recognition of tonal and rhythmic patterns • understands relationship between sound and feeling • Tasks • perform a musical piece • sing a song • review a musical work • coach someone to play a musical instrument

  6. The Intelligences • Bodily-Kinesthetic (movement) • body movement control • manual dexterity • physical agility and balance • eye and body coordination • Tasks • Perform a skit • demonstrate a sports technique • create a mime to explain something;

  7. The Intelligences • Spatial-Visual • visual and spatial perception • interpretation and creation of visual images • pictorial imagination and expression • Tasks • design a costume • interpret a painting • create a room layout

  11. How to apply Gardner’s theory in school • It is hard to teach one intelligence, what if there are seven? -Gardner • All 7 intelligences are needed to live “well” so all 7 must be taught! • But how can this be done? • Find out the strengths of your students. • Play to strengths while enhancing differences • Use a variety of methods

  12. Methods • Tic-Tac-Toe board of activities • Allows students the opportunity to select their own activities but still covers weak points. • Classroom organization • Group mixed intelligence • Group close intelligences • Depends on the students • Be more open to student suggestions • “Can we act out this book?”
