The Story of Archimedes • Archimedes lived in Syracuse, Sicily around 300 B.C. • One day the King ordered a jeweler to make him a crown out of the royal gold • When he received the crown, he suspected that the jeweler had stolen the gold and given him a fake crown. But he could not prove this!
The Story of Archimedes • The king sent for the most renowned scientist in the land, Archimedes. The king ordered Archimedes to find a way to tell if the crown was real gold or not. • Archimedes then went home to think about the problem. As he went to get into the bath tub, he realized that as he submerged himself the water level was rising.
The Story of Archimedes • Archimedes then went running from his bath tub down the street yelling, “Eureka, Eureka!”, which means, “I’ve got it!” in greek. • What did Archimedes get?
The Story of Archimedes • Archimedes’ realized that you could tell the volume of an object by submerging it in water! • He took a block of real gold and submerged it in the water to determine its volume. He then measured its mass on a scale. • He found that the ratio of mass to volume was different between the crown and the gold block! Therefore, the crown was a fake!
Density • Density is the amount of mass per unit volume. It tells you just how tightly the molecules of a substance are packed together!
Density • Different materials have different densities. Sometimes these densities are different enough that we can identify the material by density alone! • We know that rocks are produced in various ways. Igneous rock is formed by cooling magma. Sedimentary rock is rock that has been eroded by water. Metamorphic rock is rock that is changing due to extreme heat and pressure. These different processes make for rocks of different densities.
