  2. GED Language Arts, ReadingWill include Passages to Determine: • How to find Main Idea and Supporting Details The Main idea refers to what a paragraph or an article is about. "Main" means what is important, or key, "Idea" means the thought or the topic. • Main Idea will most likely be found in the first sentence, in the last sentence, or in the middle of the paragraph. • Sometimes the Main Idea is not stated in the paragraph directly (implied)

  4. GED Language Arts, ReadingWill include Passages to Determine: • Summarizing major ideas • Restating information • Applying ideas • Making inferences • Identifying style and tone • Drawing conclusions • Comparing and contrasting ideas • Recognizing author’s viewpoint

  5. Understanding Fiction: • Getting meaning from context • Identifying plot elements : Exposition, complications, conflict, climax, and resolution • Identifying cause and effect • Analyzing character and tone • Identifying figurative language • Interpreting theme

  6. Understanding Poetry: • Identifying the effects of rhythm and rhyme • Interpreting figurative language • Interpreting symbols and images • Making inferences • Interpreting theme

  7. Understanding Drama: • Understanding plot • Inferring character • Understanding motivation • Interpreting theme Remember: Reading drama texts usually means reading more than once to understand the information being presented.
